Deliverables

Typology // Specifically designed learning products for primary and secondary schools
Date // Second semester of the second year
Description

The Lesson Plan or learning material will include conceptual contents adapted to the students’ knowledge (last two courses); procedural contents (designed from existing materials, especially audio-visual resources and apps developed by the team), and attitudinal contents for education in values. In the case of this lesson plan the different ways to Santiago will allow us to reach the following shared cultural fields:

  • Artistic heritage (architecture, sculpture, painting and performing arts).
  • European ethnography.
  • Linguistic and iconographic heritage.
  • Spirituality.
  • Religious culture.

The approach will be participatory or inclusive, with the students and teachers as co-researchers during all phases of the project. A participative method will also be used in computer systems construction (Scrum or similar) and we will also use the latest design and programming technologies in the final product.

The elements of the lesson plan are: objectives and competences, pre-assessment, resources (written and audio-visual), warm-up, presentation, practice, evaluation and application.

Typology // Learning tools : app
Date // Second semester of the second year
Description

An app for Primary Students based on the lesson plans will be developed. This app will be an educational game (Serious Game, Digital Game -Based Learning). The features of this app are as follows:

  • The graphic elements that are part of the app will be attractive, useful, fun and, above all, consistent with the objective of learning and the age of the students. Each of the actions that can be performed on the app will be fully adapted to the skills of Primary students.
  • Easy-to-Use, Intuitive Navigation and User Interface.
  • Mobile-Integrated, Not Just Mobile-Friendly.
  • Functional Across Multiple Mobile Platforms.
  • The European commitment to human dignity.
  • Access to Multiple Content Types.

Methodology:: A participative method will be also used in computer systems construction, in order to follow the same kind of ideas as in the rest of the project. In Computer Science, the great importance of user implication in software development is well known. This implication is fundamental to achieve the goals of the development, so we plan to use methods for developing the system that emphasize user participation. In order to do this, we plan to use development processes, like Scrum or similar ones, in which the user is empowered as the center of the process. In addition to this, such kind of processes encourages the use of the latest design and programming technologies in the final product

Description

Salvador de Madariaga is one of the most globally renowned personalities of the Europeist movement of the middle years of the last century. In order to study his contribution to the European integration process, we count on a magnificent tool as it is his personal archive, donated to Instituto José Cornide de Estudios Coruñeses (A Coruña). Thanks to the enormous volume of documentation available, it is possible to try to rebuild the interior of important organisations in which Madariaga had a prominent role, with his comings and goings, successes and failures, as well as the learning that was shared throughout time.

We refer to the Paneuropean Union – in which he actively participated from 1932 on –, the New Commonwealth Institution – of which he was vice-chair since 1934 –, the World Foundation – of which he was the founder and president between 1930 and 1944 –, the Liberal International – of which he was the first president in 1946 –, the European Centre for Culture – which he chaired from 1950 to 1954 –, the Congress for Freedom and Culture – key element in the cultural Cold War encouraged by the CIA, with documentation in the archive since 1947 –, the cultural division of the European Movement – chaired by Madariaga since 1948 – and the College of Europe in Bruges – of which he was the founder-president in 1949 –. The aim is to trace the marks left by Madariaga as regards the configuration of the idea of Europe and his commitment to culture as its backbone; all this will be studied through his role in these institutions.

Events

Typology // Workshop
Timing // 2nd Year, 2nd Semester
Description

This event will be used to present the results of the research activity ‘Salvador de Madariga, culture as the foundation for European unity’. and to discuss them. The members of the team, who under the supervision of Prof. Luis Domínguez Castro undertake the tasks in activity ‘Salvador de Madariga, culture as the foundation for European unity’, will submit their works to the coordination one month before this workshop is held so that we can all proceed to its reading and analysis. During the seminar, these documents will be discussed in depth, refining them for their final publication. National and international researchers who will provide an added value to our works may be invited.

Impact: This activity is directly linked to the research activity ‘Salvador de Madariga, culture as the foundation for European unity’ and its impact is clearly inseparable. At present, there are different works, most of them of a high quality, which have studied, either totally or partially, institutions such as the New Commonwealth Institution, the World Foundation, or the European Centre for Culture. However, a comprehensive overview is missing, one which analyses the mutual interrelations in a crucial moment as that in which the form of the European integration process as we know it was decided, with a clear postponement of cultural aspects, which does not fully respond to the initial objectives presented in the Congress of Europe in The Hague (1948). The main impact of our research will be to provide such a comprehensive overview.

Typology // Study Visit
Timing // 1st Year, 1st Semester
Description

The teaching staff of the European Centre of Excellence from the Universidade de Vigo will visit each one of the public and private primary and secondary schools that have already signed the letter of intent to participate in the project in order to explain the activity to teachers and students. This visit will also be useful in order to compile their preconceptions about European Culture.

Impact: This activity has a central role in the project in order to achieve the full implication of students and teachers from the schools, who are the active target of this project. We will try to obtain their cooperation in order to help us create the ten lesson plans provided.

Typology // Study Visit
Timing // 1st Year, 2nd Semester.
Description

In this second visit, the teaching staff of the European Centre of Excellence from the Universidade de Vigo will present a first version of the conceptual contents to teachers and students of the primary and secondary school centres involved in the project, these contents will have been under elaboration since the first visit. Each of the education centres will work on only one Lesson Plan so that we are able to carry out an in-depth analysis during the visit and, at the same time, we make sure to cover the ten Lesson Plans. The suggestions collected will be highly important so as to initiate the seminars for teachers, who will participate hand in hand with our teaching staff in the elaboration of procedural and attitudinal contents, starting in the first semester of the second year.

Impact: This activity will allow us to continue and increase the level of participation of the schools in the elaboration of the Lesson Plans, as well as to select the most active teachers for the seminar in the following year.

Typology // Conference
Timing // 1st Year, 1st Semester
Description

In the first semester of the first year, we will hold a conference aimed at people belonging to the Asociación Aulas Abiertas of the Universidade de Vigo, which joins together seniors (people over 55) from the most diverse academic and professional backgrounds. In addition to this, this Association opens the doors of its cultural activities to the general public. This conference will be given by Prof. Luis Domínguez Castro. The particular subject of this event, related to European culture, will be agreed with the Association’s board of directors, within the framework of the project, so as to ensure interest and attendance of the largest possible audience.

Impact: Promotion of interest in European culture among seniors in our society, at the same time that we involve them in the socialisation of young children, who are in many cases under their care after school. Finally, these seniors will also make their contribution with useful comments on their perception of the importance of culture in the process of European integration; this will be done through a questionnaire, which will be distributed and collected in this conference.
